Steve McCrindle
I am drafting this Editorial whilst the morning new programme’s main feature is the Tariff War. From what I can discern, the USA is raising tariffs for a couple of reasons namely, putting America first and retaliation for what it sees as unfair foreign levies on US based businesses like DST (Digital Services Tax). I understand both reasons to a certain degree but, with the world’s stock markets in free fall and recession threatening in many countries anyway, is this the right way to go about remedying the issue. Maybe, we Indirect Tax practitioners should see it as an opportunity to assist our clients, which is exactly how I saw Brexit from a business perspective. Regardless, it is great that Indirect Taxes are now featuring prominently on the global stage.
Whilst on the subject of Digital Services Tax and Tariff’s, Toon Hasselman’s article in this very Newsletter is all about these subjects (in that order) and makes very interesting reading.
Additionally, part of our GGI Indirect Taxes Practice Group session at the GGI European Conference (Friday, 09 May 2025) will be devoted to the subject of Tariffs, as follows.
The Tariff War – Steve McCrindle (Prager Metis) & Toon Hasselman (EJP)
We live in tumultuous times. The Trump Administration in the USA has increased tariffs and other nations, including those within/through the EU, are introducing retaliatory tariffs. But what does it mean for trade generally and your clients specifically, and what can be done to mitigate the increased tariff burden.
Steve & Toon will impart to participants the result of their recent webinar/panel discussions and then open-up the discussion for attendees to participate. Hopefully, this will be rewarding for all who contribute/participate.
Along with Braumiller (USA), MSA (China) and EJP (The Netherlands), Prager Metis (UK) will be presenting the aforementioned webinar on the subject of Tariffs on 30 April 2025. We will circulate the details shortly via GGI.
This edition of GGI FYI Indirect Taxes News features other contributions from Poland, Germany, Belgium, China, Czech Republic, and South Africa, again including articles from new as well as regular contributors. The quality of the articles is very high, and the subjects discussed, very interesting. I commend this Newsletter to you.
During 2025, we plan to run Indirect Taxes Practice Group sessions at GGI's European Conference, North American Conference, and World Conference. Plans are at advanced stages for both the European & North American conference sessions.
My sincere thanks to all contributors and look forward to seeing at least some of you at the European (Marbella, Spain) & North American (Atlanta, USA) conferences.
Hope you enjoy the Newsletter!
Kind regards,
Steve McCrindleResponsible Editor & Global Chair of the GGI Indirect Taxes Practice Group
